How To Manage The Holidays Without Going Crazy!

by Shari McGuire

I paused in a store recently to watch a gift bow making demonstration and my mind wandered back to the days when I hand stamped Christmas cards and created gift toppers out of pine bough and ribbon. Then, I became a parent and was working 70 hours per week. I raced around for last minute gifts and got them wrapped with a stick on bow just in time to be opened. And Christmas cards, what Christmas cards? I didn’t even get store bought cards in the mail one year. Perhaps you can relate.

There’s good news though, you can manage the holidays without going crazy. Here’s a few simple tips to get you started:

Simplify. Review your holiday to do list and cut out activities that don’t excite you. That goes for both your business and your personal life. You can choose to politely decline the holiday party invitation from a client if it doesn’t excite you.

Ask for help! At home, create your list of tasks, divide and conquer with your spouse and children. If your kids are too young to help, hire a babysitter to watch them while you run errands. In your business, consider hiring a virtual assistant during the holidays to help mail out your business holiday cards or pack the extra volume of customer orders you receive this time of year.

Tackle work commitments early. If you know of tasks that will come due during the holidays, set aside time now to begin working on them.

Take short cuts. Unless you really enjoy preparing mass quantities of food from scratch, consider buying pre-made foods from the deli or bakery to round out your menu. Speaking of short cuts, remember that bow demonstration I passed? You see, two months, two years and two decades from now, it won’t matter to my five-year old son that his gifts had homemade bows or the stick on kind. It will matter that he had quality playtime with Mommy when he was young. And to me, that’s what matters most.
